Rare Records: A Melbourne Icon
Rare Records is a Melbourne based, independent, online record store, specialising in the coolest rare and collectable vinyl records, CDs, posters and other music memorabilia.
Operating for 34 years, Rare Records is an institution within the Australian music scene, known for offering the most extensive and obscure range of music products. We also have a history in releasing music on our label, along with booking and hosting live performances and appearances; and continue to dabble in supporting bands we love, however we can.
The History Of Rare Records

1991
The Beginning (1991–1995)
Rare Records begins as a passion project — a mail-order hobby business run out of home. A weekend market stall at Fairway’s Leisure Market in Cheltenham soon follows. This was all about crate digging, community, and sharing the love of rare music.

1996
First Storefront & Early Growth (1996–2003)
On February 2nd, 1996, Rare Records opens its first proper retail store in Hughesdale. It quickly becomes a go-to spot for second-hand vinyl, CDs, and music memorabilia. The online presence also kicks off here — Rare Records becomes one of Australia’s first record stores to launch a website.

2004
The St Kilda Era (2004–2010)
In 2003, the store moves to Acland Street, St Kilda, opening officially on October 29th, 2004. It becomes an iconic record shop and live music venue, hosting performances, growing the customer base, and cementing its place in Melbourne’s music scene. In March 2010, the physical shop closes as the business transitions fully online.

2011
Pop-Ups & Reconnection (2011–2021)
After 7 years online-only, Rare Records returns to retail with a pop-up at Highpoint Shopping Centre, which becomes a permanent fixture for nearly five years. It brings the brand to a new audience and helps bridge the gap between digital and in-person music lovers.

2022
Point Cook & The New Chapter (2022–Present)
In June 2022, Rare Records opens its current warehouse retail space in Point Cook. It houses the full collection under one roof for the first time. With plans for in-store gigs, events, and a new website on the way, this marks a fresh chapter in the Rare Records legacy.
"We’re not just selling records — we’re preserving stories, championing music, and keeping the culture alive one crate at a time.
